IN SUMMER OF 2015, I WAS GIVEN THE WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN THE PROTÉGÉ PROGRAM. THE PROTÉGÉ PROGRAM IS A RESEARCH PROGRAM CREATED BY THE COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING TO GIVE A HAND-PICKED NUMBER OF FRESHMAN UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN RESEARCH PROJECTS THAT ARE CURRENTLY GOING ON AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI (UC). I WAS HONORED TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS PROGRAM. BEFORE THAT SUMMER, I HAD NO EXPERIENCE IN THE RESEARCH FIELD, BUT I WAS INTERESTED IN EXPLORING THAT ASPECT OF ENGINEERING. I WAS PAIRED UP WITH A UC FACULTY MEMBER IN THE BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING FIELD TO ASSIST HER IN HER PROJECT.
The basis of the research project I worked on was developing handheld affordable sensors to diagnose certain medical conditions. The sensors do this by identifying specific DNA strands that are associated with certain genetic disorders based on the change in resistance that occurs as the DNA passes through a pore opening. My role in the research was to vary variables in the change in resistance equation to obtain the largest resistance change possible under certain parameters.
